The California mastitis test (CMT) is widely used in the United States as a rapid “animal-side” assay that can be used in conjunction with clinical signs to identify mastitis. The basis for this test is lysis of somatic cells by the CMT reagent to precipitate the DNA and proteins contained in the cells. Consequently, the development of a change in viscosity of the reagent when it is added to milk is directly related to the relative number of somatic cells.
